LAGOS UNDER 20 YEARS OF APC: TAXES, DEBTS, AND NO WELFARE FOR THE PEOPLE

ADP Lagos calls for a new era of people-centered governance

For two decades, Lagosians have endured the grip of one political empire. The All Progressives Congress (APC), and its predecessors under different names, have governed Lagos for 20 uninterrupted years. They have branded themselves as “progressives,” as “performers,” and as “builders.” But the lived experience of the ordinary Lagosian tells a completely different story – a story of broken promises, endless taxation, suffocating debts, and the deliberate neglect of people’s welfare.

The Debt Trap of Lagos State:

Today, Lagos State holds the unenviable title of the most indebted state in Nigeria. Billions of naira borrowed over the years, with very little transparency on how these funds have been utilized. While Lagosians were told the debts were for “development,” what stands visible across communities are incomplete projects, inflated contracts, and the enrichment of a small political elite.

Instead of using Lagos’s enormous revenue-generating power to free citizens from poverty, the APC government has mortgaged the future of our children with endless loans. Lagosians deserve to ask: Where is the money?

A Tax Master, Not a Welfare Government:

Lagos State under APC has become the highest tax collector in Nigeria. From multiple taxes on small businesses, to levies on commercial vehicles, to tolls on roads, to endless charges on properties – Lagosians are being squeezed dry daily.

Drivers pay to enter roads built decades ago. Artisans are taxed for simply opening their workshops. Market women are harassed by multiple levies, often collected by touts who operate with the backing of the state’s political machinery. Yet, in spite of this revenue flood, where is the welfare?

No social security for the unemployed.

No payroll support for workers.

Poor healthcare system where patients must buy every single item.

Schools without adequate teachers or facilities.

Insecurity in communities despite billions spent on “security.”

This is not governance for the people. It is governance for an oligarchy.

20 Years of Neglecting the People:

While Lagos elites close to the ruling party thrive, ordinary citizens suffer. The average Lagosian is paying more but receiving less. Poverty deepens daily while the government spends billions on white-elephant projects, foreign trips, and inflated contracts.

The reality is clear: APC cannot create wealth. APC can only tax wealth. And in this endless cycle, the people remain poor while the government grows richer.

The ADP Lagos Alternative: People Before Politics

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) Lagos is standing up as the credible alternative. Our message is simple: Lagos must be rescued from 20 years of waste and returned to its rightful owners – the people.

ADP Lagos envisions a state where:

Welfare is prioritized over taxation. Instead of burdening citizens with multiple taxes, ADP will implement payroll support and welfare schemes to lift families out of poverty.

Debt is replaced with development. Every revenue generated will go into tangible projects – modern schools, affordable healthcare, housing for all, and genuine infrastructure that serves the people.

Government is transparent. Lagosians will know where every kobo is going. No more shadowy deals, no more hidden debts.

Opportunities are expanded. Lagos has the talent and energy of millions; ADP will create enabling environments for small businesses, startups, artisans, and professionals to thrive without being crushed by unnecessary levies.

A Call to Lagosians:

For 20 years, APC has ruled Lagos like a personal empire. They have reduced governance to a game of taxation and borrowing while the people sink deeper into hardship. But Lagos is not destined for endless suffering. Lagos can rise again, if Lagosians rise up to demand change.

ADP Lagos is not a party of moneybags. We are a party of the people, by the people, and for the people. Our strength lies not in the billions of the elite, but in the millions of ordinary Lagosians who desire a government that works for them.

Lagosians must now stand with courage. The time has come to say:
No more taxes without welfare.
No more debts without development.
No more APC oligarchy.

Lagos deserves better, and together, we will make it happen!
